From parades to pool parties, caftans, and glitter, the month of June is a celebration of our queerness. While dancing in the streets and rainbow everything has become the visual representation of Pride month; it's essential to take a step back and reflect on the true reason for this month. So, before I sashay in my speedo, paint my nails, and turn on Slut Pop - I am taking a minute to reflect on the 262 anti-LGBTQA bills introduced in 2022. I want to amplify the voices of the 79% of Americans who support laws that protect the LGBTQ community. And I ask you to do the same.
Businesses have the opportunity to amplify and support their LGBTQ colleagues, neighbors, and partners in recognizing their identity, power, and uniqueness. Allyship goes beyond rainbow-printed attire and changing your logo on social channels in June. Rather than commercializing the month, today's companies are educating their teams on how to be effective amplifiers and advocates.
5 Ways to Shine During Pride Month
There are many ways companies can demonstrate allyship during Pride month. The most effective strategies include those extending beyond a single month to create a lasting impact.
You don't need to be an expert to be an ally. With my team at Talk Shoppe, I’ve put together some practical strategies to inspire others to lift the LGBTQ community.
1. Take a Stand Against Anti-LGBTQ Legislation
Anti-LGBTQ legislation has skyrocketed in the last four years from 42 to over 670 anti-LGBTQ introduced bills. Half of the legislation proposed this year targets the transgender community specifically.
If these measures were to pass, they would restrict LGBTQ issues in school curriculums, permit religious exemptions to discriminate against LGBTQ people and limit trans people’s ability to play sports, use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity, and receive gender-affirming health care. Companies have an enormous platform. When a company advocates for laws like the Equality Act, it raises awareness and garners more public support.
2. Celebrate Queer Stories Regularly Through Social Media
Rather than a simple Pride month post, focus on creating ongoing content that features LGBTQ businesses, spotlighting LGBTQ professionals, and sharing articles by queer professionals within your niche. Authenticity is key, so when in doubt, consult your LGBTQ co-workers and get their perspectives.
Of course, you can still share a #HappyPride post or two. But, remember that a post is only the beginning of a larger conversation.
3. Create a Conversation, Foster Education
Ask directly for insights on your company's representation. Is your workplace a safe, open environment for queer colleagues? Does your company adequately uphold equity and inclusion? A DEI consultant is an excellent step for businesses looking to be better allies. Consultants provide an unbiased entity to thoroughly critique and evaluate the effectiveness of policies, outcomes, and overall culture.
Be open to education and take the time to research evolving issues facing the queer community. Staying informed on topics such as definitions surrounding the queer community, vocabulary, pronouns in the workplace, and other issues such as healthcare and adoption law will ultimately benefit your workplace in becoming a more inclusive space.
4. Seek Out and Listen to LGBTQ Voices
Learn about what talks, lectures, or events are happening near you. Listen, I love a good party, but seeking opportunities to learn more is equally important. Consider sponsoring an event during Pride Month. Invite a local speaker to your offices or attend a virtual conference.
Alternatively, many companies offer the option to attend an educational event or Pride-related activity during a paid one to two-hour break during the work day. These suggestions effectively allow employees to celebrate Pride based on their preferences.
5. Pledge Your Financial Support
Supporting LGBTQ businesses and organizations is the best way to take a stand. Experts within the movement agree that it's essential for corporations to have a nonprofit partnership to show their support for the LGBTQ community in an authentic way. This year, my team at Talk Shoppe partnered with Box Fox to support small LGBTQ businesses and donate to The Trevor Project on behalf of all our clients. We also made a donation to the Say Gay Fund that took a stand against Florida’s Don’t Say Gay Bill.

Nonprofit Spotlight: The Trevor Project
The Trevor Project is an incredible nonprofit that began with the mission to end suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning young people. I remember what it was like growing up in a conservative area, going to a Christian school, and feeling alone with no support. I got involved with The Trevor Project to give the LGBTQ youth of today what I didn’t have. Did you know that LGBTQ young people are four times more likely to attempt suicide?
By volunteering with Trevor, I can use my talents as a moderator to create connections with these young people and be someone they can trust.
The Trevor Project is working to build a safer, more inclusive world. The critical service points of the organization include:
Crisis Services
Peer Support
Public Education
Research
Advocacy
Allies can get involved by volunteering their time or pledging a monetary donation to this vital organization. Learn more about how corporate partners can work with The Trevor Project Team to expand their impact.
On behalf of myself and the entire Talk Shoppe team, have a very happy #Pride and remember as Momma Ru says, “If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an AMEN!”
